Music and Memory Pride Celebration (Relaxed Event)

Join LGBT Foundation’s Pride in Ageing Programme, Manchester Art Gallery and Dementia Disco for a relaxed afternoon of celebration and music

Free, drop-in on the day

Manchester Art Gallery, the Pride in Ageing programme at LGBT Foundation and Dementia Disco invite you to a relaxed Sunday-afternoon celebration of music, memory and LGBTQ+ communities to mark Manchester Village Pride weekend. All activities are free and drop-in on the day with no need to book.

Hear composer Vivian Cheung’s What remains dear sound installation on loop from 1-4pm in the Derek Jarman Pocket Park (located outside at the Mosley Street Entrance of the gallery). This recording of a piece for piano, handbells and electronics explores the concept of ‘real’ chronological time and LGBTQ+ visibility from the 1960s to today. Heard alongside live instruments the piece samples field recordings from current day LGBTQ+ spaces, cassette tapes, snippets of poetry and the voices of LGBTQ+ residents of Greater Manchester taken from recordings for the LGBT Foundation archive at Manchester Central Library.

Tap your toes or show off your best moves at the Dementia-Friendly Disco space open from 2-4pm. A line-up of LGBTQ+ community DJs will be backed with archive video projections. Hear their selections of uplifting pride anthems from across the decades in an accessible and lower-volume, low-sensory space with plenty of seating. Dance, hangout for a while or grab a free juice or hot drink. Presented with thanks to Dementia Disco and North West Film Archive.

Join a tour of artworks at the gallery at 3pm exploring pieces related to LGBTQ+ history from Manchester Art Gallery’s collections. Meet at the Information Desk at 3pm.

There will also be an LGBT Foundation info stall in the atrium for the duration of the event where you can find out what’s going on and pick up information about groups and services.

To ensure our space is welcoming and inclusive, we require everyone to follow our Safer Spaces Policy.  Manchester Art Gallery is an accessible venue – for their access information please see here. Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any additional accessibility needs for this event.
