Geeks for Social Change

The Trans Organisers Fund was a one-off pilot fund for trans organisers in Greater Manchester. The fund was administered by Geeks for Social Change and financially backed by Lankelly Chase, with a steering group consisting of Greater Manchester-based trans organisers — many of whom are now on The Trans Dimension.
We published a report at the end of 2024 on what we spent it on, and what we think grassroots groups, funders and landlords could do to make the world a more just place for trans and disabled people. You can read it here, and we’ll be sharing some more thoughts in the weeks to come.

The goal of the fund was to facilitate trans healing and justice work in Greater Manchester. We feel that being a trans organiser is currently extremely stressful, underfunded and high stakes at the best of times, with almost no material support out there for the people doing the work on the ground to ensure a better future for trans people.
Our work attempted to support organisers to work out how we can do this work sustainably in ways that value people’s time and result in long lasting community infrastructure and care networks.
There’s a lot in there but the single clearest theme we heard from almost everyone about was event and venue accessibility. Greater Manchester now has almost no trans-friendly, accessible and affordable spaces, with the few there are in constant threat of closure or gentrification. We think much more could be done by landlords and the wider VCSE sector to provide this much-needed space to some of the most marginalised.
We welcome financial donations to continue the work we do at GFSC on projects like the Trans Organisers Fund, please use the donation link at the top of the page. We also welcome conversations with any funders who want to help us continue this work, as our source of funding for this work no longer exists and we cannot find another suitable source of funds.
